Ngāti Porou, Ngati Hine

Kataraina is a Māmā of two and Nanny of four, with a love of healing through music, among other things. Kataraina’s natural Mum, Irene Pipi was a singer with a love of music who sang featured with Bill Sevesi, Hugo Speeman, Daphne Walker and others.

Her musical career has included composing and performing alongside others including Korimako in the 80’s, Black Katz from the 80’s. She has recorded and produced five albums of original and contemporary music. Her recent academic studies have involved unpacking the composer in her. Her current PhD studies focus on healing through music.

Oranga Ngakau is He Puna Waiora is a developing framework reflecting on the gift of song and sound as a healing tool. The components woven together contribute to capturing moments, honouring loved ones, holding memories and sharing waiata to ease the pain, heal the mamae and bring acceptance and joy. We all have a puna waiata to draw on in times of need. Sometimes it requires replenishing with old and new. This kaupapa seeks to explore how and in what ways does waiata or music contribute to oranga by reflecting on a range of compositions both traditional and contemporary.
